"Songa Tented Camp is set in a quiet location in the northern reaches of the Serengeti. Private vehicles and guides allow you extra flexibility, increasing your chances of witnessing the river crossings and mega herds everyone flocks here for. Couple that with great service, and you have an excellent safari experience."

Songa, means 'to go forward', and this camp certainly takes on that mantra - it is in a great location for guests to catch the famous river crossings of the Great Migration. Open all year-round, Songa Tented Camp is one of Legendary Expeditions adventurous properties, along with Mila Tented and Nyasi Migrational Camp, which now takes up permanent residence in the hilly outcrops of Kogatende, within Tanzania's Serengeti.

The nearest international airport is Kilimanjaro International. Once guests have arrived at Arusha airport, they will fly via private charter or scheduled flight to Lamai or Kogatende airstrip.

Guest accommodation consists of 8 en suite tents and one family tent, which contains 2 en suite rooms and a shared lounge. The camp is split with 6 tents on one side and 2 tents and the family tent on the other. Each side has their own lounge and dining facility. All tents can be made up as twin or king configuration with the possibility of an extra bed.

Every standard tent has a double bed with mosquito nets, bedside tables and lighting, end-bed seating, and a wardrobe. A few rugs provide some extra comfort underfoot, while the tent’s curtains can be closed not only at night but also to keep guests cool during the day. The en-suite facilities are accessed through a zipped opening to the side of the tent, and they comprise toilet, washbasin/s, and classic bucket shower. At the front, a zipped door leads out on to a private seating area, where you can relax and watch the wildlife wander by! The family tent has all these furnishings and amenities, as well as additional space for children.

Songa Tented Camp has its own main area, with a canvas lounge, mess tent and bar area. The main area is simple yet authentic, and the open-air lounge can be arranged outside to take advantage of the views. A fire-pit is usually set up just a short stroll from each mess tent, providing the perfect place for social gatherings. Here, you can enjoy a few drinks and swap a few safari stories.

There are plenty of things to do here:

  • Private vehicle game drives

    – The Serengeti National Park is a fabulous year-round destination for wildlife watching, with the area’s sprawling plains, woodlands, and water sources supporting a wide variety of species. Among the mammals in residence are all of the Big Five – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! You can also look out for smaller predators and herbivores, such as cheetah, hyenas, jackals, wild dog, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and a fine assortment of antelopes. Drives usually take place in the early morning and late afternoon, although you might like to arrange full-day game drives as well. At Songa Tented Camp, guests enjoy the exclusivity of a private vehicle.
  • Witness the Great Migration

    – The camp follows the herd and so guests will be afforded sightings of the famous river crossings and mega herds. On any day, you can expect to see wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles making their way either through the crocodile-strewn waters or across the grassy plains.
  • Bush dining

    – Lunch picnic, sundowners, and bush dining are all available. Please contact a YZ expert for more details.
  • Hot air ballooning

    – The camp is able to organise hot air balloon rides, so you can get your own bird’s-eye view over the park. This activity begins shortly before dawn, with the balloon rising in time for you to enjoy the sunrise followed by a couple of hours of spotting game. You’ll descend to an extravagant champagne breakfast in the bush.
  • Wildlife spotting

    – Such intense concentrations of wildebeest and zebra attract impressive numbers of big cats in turn – look out for lion, leopard, and cheetah lurking on the banks of the river! There’s a lot of other resident wildlife too, including hyenas, jackals, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and an exciting variety of antelopes. The birding is superb, featuring everything from raptors to songbirds to waterbirds.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
