Wayo Serengeti Green Camp

OVERVIEW:

Serengeti Green Camp is a camp of two locations – from December to March it’s based in the Serengeti’s South West (around Kusini), and from June to November it’s in the northern Kogatende area. The idea is to focus on the southern plains for calving season and then move to the north for the famous river crossings season on the Mara River. The difference from other mobiles is their ability to locate themselves away from the crowds, without missing out on the action. The camp is owned and operated by Wayo Africa, a company specializing in authentic safaris that go off the beaten track in northern Tanzania, and its sister camps include Wayo Serengeti Fly Camp and Wayo Serengeti Walking Camp. The accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, and a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks. And children aged 16 years and younger incur just 50 percent of the adult rate.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

At both locations, the camp is accessed via road transfer from the local airstrip – Serengeti South or Kogatende. The northern location sits quietly just to the east of Tabora (inside the park), where as the southern location is just to the east of the Kusini Kopjes.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SERENGETI GREEN CAMP:

Guest accommodation at both camps consists of ten adventure mobile tents, the likes of which we've not seen before. The designs show 280 degree views from your bed through netted floor to ceiling 'windows'. Dropdown covers can be drawn across to seal you in if you're in any way concerned about being quite so open! Room features include a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, and luggage racks. Each tent is raised onto decking, leaving a lovely private veranda set with a couple of chairs and a small table – here, you can sit back and enjoy your views, if you don't want to lie on the bed and soak them in! The outside shower connects to the main tent via a short covered walkway and the toilet sits inside the main tent structure. His and her wash basins are positioned next to the luggage rack behind the headboard. The camp supplies soap, shampoo, and conditioner.

A lot of time at Wayo Serengeti Green Camp is focused around the campfire. Meals are often served al fresco, prepared by the camp’s chef, and make the most of the natural surroundings. We have not seen the designs for the main areas yet, but this is a camp that's set to be superb; a genuine challenger to the Serengeti's best mobile camps, at a much more affordable price.

ACTIVITIES AT SERENGETI GREEN CAMP:

The main activity available from Serengeti Green Camp is a vehicle safari that follows the Great Migration. However, when the camp is located in the northern Serengeti between July and November, the camp also offers walking safaris.

• Frequently described as Mother Nature’s most spectacular show, the migration involves huge herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles, all moving around the Serengeti and often up into Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve in their search for food to sustain them throughout the year.
• December through to March sees the herds grazing on the Southern Serengeti’s short-grass plains, with the calving season usually taking place during three weeks of February and into March. From July to November, the herds are pushing to the northernmost parts of the park, and during these months the route includes dramatic crossings of the crocodile-strewn River Mara!
• There’s plenty of other wildlife to see, not least the lion, leopard, and cheetah that pursue the herbivores along their way. Elephant and buffalo abound, and you can also expect to see a fine assortment of antelopes.
• There’s a lot of birdlife too!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
