With approximately 60% of the remaining population, Rwanda is widely regarded as the best place to view mountain gorillas on the planet.

Seeing the gorillas of the Virunga Volcanoes is without any doubt one of the finest wildlife experiences in the world. It is not uncommon for our clients to sit within the midst of a gorilla family and to come face to face with one of the huge silverbacks.

There is nothing quite like it; an experience reserved for a special few. Rwanda also has an ever-improving big game safari industry, and we would suggest combining the gorillas with Akagera National Park, overlooking the beautiful Lake Rwanyakazinga.

Akagera comprises some of the most scenic savannah in East Africa (open plains, woodlands, lakes, swamp, and grassy low mountains) and is home to the Big 5 (elephants, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino). We offer a range of activities here including day and night drives, boating safaris and fishing. Combining the two is an amazing safari and gives you the full game viewing experience.

This gorilla safari starts with one night at Kigali, followed by a Big 5 game viewing experience in Wilderness Magashi. After your classic safari, it is off to Volcanoes National Park for two hikes into the ancient forest to spot the mountain gorillas.

The two safari lodges in this itinerary are owned by Wilderness who are well known throughout Safari Africa not only for their extraordinary levels of service and luxury accommodation but their immense contribution to wildlife and landscape conservation.

Day 1 Kigali

earlymorning1

Due to the arrival time of most international flights you will need to overnight in Kigali at the start of your trip. We are big fans of the Kigali Serena which has a superb central location. The hotel offers a really lovely and comfortable level of accommodation with different bars and restaurants to chose from and a large sundeck for relaxing by the pool.

Days 2-4 Akagera National Park

Game Drive Akagera

After your night in Kigali, you’ll be transferred via road to Akagera National Park for your Big 5 game viewing experience at Wilderness Magashi. This is a great little trip as you get that classic safari, but you don't have to cover huge distances to get between the gorillas and Big 5 game viewing. Akagera is Rwanda’s only Big Five National Park and is home to the largest protected wetlands in Central Africa. The park is one of the lesser visited areas in Rwanda and offers an exceptionally quiet and off the beaten track experience. The camp offers tented suites each with their own private deck and stunning views over the lakes. The service here is as you would expect from a Wilderness camp – in short superb. Overall Wilderness Magashi has found the balance between authenticity and luxury which suits the adventurous nature of the park.

Days 5-7 Volcanoes National Park

Gorilla in volcanoes national park, Rwanda Safaris

From here you head to Volcanoes for your time with the gorillas. There is a day of gorilla trekking and golden monkey trekking included during your stay at Wilderness Bisate. The lodge is arguably East Africa's most luxurious camp and offers an exceptionally high level of service. The suites here are private, spacious and beautifully designed with king beds, viewing decks and copper bathtubs, the attention to detail here is simply outstanding.

On the final day of your adventure, you’ll be returned to Kigali Airport via road transfer in time for your return flight home. Should time allow we can organise a visit to the Genocide Museum which acts as a sobering reminder of the country’s recent history.
