Selinda Explorers Camp is owned and operated by Great Plains Conservation. This company specializes in conservation tourism, and its impressive portfolio spans Botswana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe! Due to its small size, the camp has a very exclusive feel. The accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, all wildlife-viewing activities, and park fees. At extra cost, flights may be arranged.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
The camp is situated in a remote part of the Selinda Reserve, along the banks of the reserve’s spillway which is often a dry riverbed, but flows and links the Okavango to the Linyanti wetlands in periods of high flood. It can be accessed via flight from Maun (45 minutes) or Kasane (50 minutes), followed by 45–50 minutes’ game drive road transfer. The site is beautiful, featuring massive mangosteen and jackalberry trees.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SELINDA EXPLORERS CAMP:
Guest accommodation consists of just four tents. Three sleep a maximum of two adults, and one is suitable for a family or group of four persons. All tents are Meru style – an outer layer of canvas extends over the inner layer to form a covered veranda. The veranda is set with a small table and classic campaign chairs, so you can relax and enjoy your views over the stunning spillway! On entering a standard tent, you’ll find a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, end-of-bed seating, a writing desk and chair, an antique fan, and snug rugs on the canvas flooring. Behind canvas flaps halfway through the tent, there’s a washroom area, with storage furniture, twin copper washbasins with mirrors over, and a full-length mirror too. Finally, at the back of the tent, there’s the open-air shower room, which includes a separate toilet. The family or group tent benefits from an additional bedroom, and all accommodation has a distinctive explorers style!
The communal tents at Selinda Explorers Camp also have a very adventurous vibe. Both are entirely open at the front, and each of their verandas is strewn with comfy chairs and cushions. The lounge tent contains additional seating around a chunky coffee table, as well as another antique fan and all sorts of little touches to create an authentic safari feel. In the dining tent, guests tuck in to delicious meals at chic tables, all the while enjoying the scenery. Al fresco dining is available too, and guests can even bathe in brass hipbaths on a sandbank close to the spillway! This pastime is particularly popular with honeymooners, or couples on a romantic vacation.
ACTIVITIES AT SELINDA EXPLORERS CAMP:
The camp offers some classic safari activities:
Expertly guided game drives- Drives from camp are available during early morning and late afternoon into evening. The Selinda Reserve covers over 120,000 hectares of savanna, woodlands, floodplains, and numerous water sources. Among the wildlife highlights here are four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! The latter two species are often seen in huge herds, quenching their thirst at waterholes. Smaller predators you can expect to see include cheetah, hyena, jackal, and the rare wild dog, while the herbivore count features giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and an amazing assortment of antelopes.
Walking safaris- Also accompanied by an expert guide, walks take place during early morning and late afternoon too. This activity is ideal for anyone interested in taking a close look at the smaller lives of the Selinda Reserve – its plants, insects, and bird species.
Canoeing trips- Please note, the availability of this activity depends on the weather during the time of your stay. Hippo are at large in the reserve’s rivers, and there are a lot of birding specials, such as fish eagle, saddle-billed stork, and the gorgeous little lilac-breasted roller!
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
