"Although this isn't a property we use often in Laikipia, Sanctuary Tambarare works well when combining it with other Sanctuary camps across the continent. However, my preference in this area generally lies with more authentic camps, which are located in quieter game viewing areas."

OVERVIEW:

Please contact us as soon as possible if you’d like to be one of the first guests to experience Sanctuary’s brand new Tambarare. We reckon this recent addition to the Sanctuary portfolio will be as high quality as the company’s Olonana and Kichakani. Accommodation will be booked on a full-board basis, and the camp will be open all year round.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is situated within the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, in Laikipia. To get here, guests will fly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport, either to Nanyuki Airstrip or to the airstrip at Kamok. After that, there’s a road transfer – half an hour from Kamok or an hour from Nanyuki. The camp is surrounded by fever trees.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SANCTUARY TAMABARE:

There are ten tents. Individually decorated, each has a style described as boutique-meets-bush. The golden age of safari mingles with contemporary designs and a few references to the local culture. Looking at the images, we note that furnishings will include a super-king-size bed surrounded by mosquito netting, bedside stands and lighting, and a writing desk and chair. There’ll be a separate seating area, comprising a couple of easy chairs and a table. The décor includes Maasai-inspired art in shades of blue, for a serene feel. In the en-suite washroom, you’ll find a toilet, twin washbasins, and a walk-in shower. And each tent has a private veranda, where you’ll enjoy beautiful views over Ol Pejeta’s plains!

Images of the communal lounge and dining area at Tambarare show a very stylish space, featuring comfortable sofas and armchairs around coffee tables and chic separate tables-and-chairs for the camp’s delicious meals. We’re told that the colours within this area are inspired by nature, from the relatively neutral wicker lampshades to the yellows, greens, and purples of the seating, for example. Guests will also enjoy the bar tent, complete with deck, and the traditional boma in the grounds.

ACTIVITIES AT SANCTUARY TAMABARE:

Sanctuary Tembarare will offer an exhilarating range of things to do, as follows:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is made up of over 35,000 hectares of savanna, woodlands, and water sources. Among the wildlife you might spot while on vehicle safari are all Big Five – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! Ol Pejeta contains a lot of other mammals, such as Northern Speciality Species members Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, and gerenuk.
  • Bush walks

    - This activity will be offered during the morning, before the heat sets in. In the company of your guide, you’ll scrutinise the plants, insects, and birds of Ol Pejeta.
  • Night drives

    - Come nightfall, a whole host of interesting animals may be viewed while out with your knowledgeable guide. You’ll be encouraged to look out for the likes of aardvark, bat-eared fox, and striped polecat. Lion and leopard might be sighted too.
  • Rhino encounters

    - Currently the Conservancy is home to 130 black rhinos, but it’s the two northern white species that will be the focus of this activity. You’ll be invited to meet them and to hear their story.
  • Lion tracking

    - Why not spend some time with a ranger and get to know Ol Pejeta’s lions? Rangers typically take notes and report their findings to the local Ecological Monitoring Department.
  • Cycling safaris

    - This will be an all-day adventure, featuring wildlife viewing, a pause for a picnic lunch, and some climbing at Big Rock.
  • Horse riding with rhinos

    - Morning or evening horse rides will be available within an endangered species enclosure. Here you’ll encounter not only rhinos but also Grevy’s zebra and Jackson’s hartebeest.
  • Hippo Hide Natura Trail

    - Amble along the banks of the river and you’ll be sure to come across hippos, wallowing in the shallow spots. This pastime should make for a refreshing change of pace from game drives.
  • Community interactions

    - Guests will be invited to visit local communities and become familiar with Ol Pejeta’s efforts concerning education, agriculture, and livestock enterprise. This will be ideal for anyone interested in culture as well as safari.
  • Running

    - Routes across the plains, measuring 5 to 7 kilometres, will be popular with keep fit fans! Don’t forget your running shoes.
  • Gym-in-the-wild

    - Finally, Tambarare will offer one-hour coach-led classes focusing on functional fitness.

* This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals will pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
